Sometimes the experiences of life seem to mute us – we are unable to express what it is that is arising within us. Other times we may feel that there is not enough that we can say to express all that we are feeling in response or reaction to life’s vicissitudes.
What could a call to silence mean within the context of prayer and reflection? It occurs to me that this silence would not be a move TO silence, but more a gathering or collecting of ourselves IN a silence that can allow us to breathe in a wider context. Could it be a “place” that we are already in and still somehow unaware?
Breathing in this silence we do not seek to rest in complacency and escapism, for those are not silence at all, but simply a manifestation of the loudest and disruptive distraction that we foolishly misname as silence.
No, this Silence is an abiding expansiveness of the heart of all, the very heart of God. Here we rest in a field of complete surrender, which is vibrant engagement wherein silence reveals itself as a deep interactive Listening that speaks the truth of compassion through us, commanding us to engage!.
It is precisely this challenging compassion flowing in the constant breeze of silence, which excludes nothing and no one and includes all in all, that can and is now transforming us if we but allow it to blow…
Silence is the movement of the Holy Spirit within which we are adamantly invited to participate!
Peace,
Thomas
A very timely message for me, Thomas. Thanks for sharing.
Uh hmmm. I like this one very much and love how you express what God has planted inside your soul to share. That must be overwhelming sometimes, but know and be affirmed that I and many others feel you are using the gifts God has given you in a very positive and effective way. I am certain that God is well pleased.
